John Clarke John R. Clarke is Regents Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Texas at Austin, where he has taught since 1980. His teaching, research, and publications have focused on the visual culture of ancient Rome, on art-historical methodology, and on contemporary art and criticism. He has published seven books; two appeared in 2007: Looking at Laughter: Humor, Power, and Transgression in Roman Visual Culture, 100 B.C.-A.D. 250 (University of California Press) and Roman Life: 100 B.C.-A.D. 200 (Abrams). He has published numerous articles, chapters, and reviews, including several on the mosaics and paintings of Villa A.
Michael Thomas Michael L. Thomas is a Senior Research Associate at the University of Texas at Austin. He has taught at UT Austin, Southern Methodist University, the University of Michigan, and has held a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship at Tufts University. His teaching and research center on Etruscan and Roman architecture and archaeology. He has excavated in Italy for 15 years; in addition to the Oplontis Project he also co-directs the Mugello Valley Archaeological Project. His publications include articles in the Journal of Roman Archaeology, the American Journal of Numismatics, Etruscan Studies, and the Memoirs of the American Academy in Rome.
