Charles Bartlett 03/08/2012 09:02 AM To Matt_Bowser@fws.gov cc bcc Subject Re: Kenai Delphacids Dear Matt - I began looking at the specimens today.  Most of the pinned specimens were Javesella pellucida, and I have them databased (attached).  For the pinned material, this leaves 2 male Criomorphus (which is exciting because I consider them rare), 2  probably Javesella's that I need to dissect, and a couple of females which I have to consider more carefully, 2 capsules and all the alcohol. I've added the KNWR:Ento number to the two Delphacodes serrata specimens that I retained previously, along with a note that they were from the long-term monitoring project. The website should be stable, but I would need to check with IT.   You are welcome to link to it; or you are welcome to download the photos and upload them onto your own database. I think the databases can be linked, but I'll need to get in touch with someone at the AMNH who administers the database to determine how this can be done; and probably we'll need to get your database administer directly in touch with AMNH to sort this out.  I'm part of one of the NSF ADBC projects, and the data will will go to iDigBio, GBIF, Discover Life, and others.  I'm not sure how they will deal with records duplicated in the databases, etc.  Just so you know, the contact person for our databasing project is Katja Seltmann (kseltmann@amnh.org).  I'll touch base with her on this.  I know at the moment she is busy assembling the annual report for the project. Our databases operate a little differently - I am not able to give a group of specimens the same code, but I can assign a series of codes to a sequence of specimens all at once. Anyway, more to the point - The first alcohol vial I looked at (5092) contains 2 female Achorotile (that I may be able to get to species), and one Criomorphus.  Just the sort of thing I could use for molecular barcoding. What would the policy be for getting extractions of specimens? I would also like to relate my specimens to your database system, especially if the database is made available on the internet.  See the URI's below for examples of KNWR specimens linked out to GenBank, BOLD, and UAM. http://arctos.database.museum/guid/KNWR:Ento:6133 http://arctos.database.museum/guid/KNWR:Ento:6457 I just looked into one vial of specimens I had mailed to you some time ago.  It had contained four individuals, two of which you returned to me and two of which you retained with permission.  I just made two new records for the two specimens you retained.  Could you please add the KNWR:Ento catalog numbers to the specimens and check my records to make sure they are correct?  The specimens are no longer owned by KNWR (in other words you could destroy them without consequence), but I must account for them because they were taken as part of a quantitative project.  Also, may I link to the images you posted? Are the image URI's expected to be stable? http://arctos.database.museum/guid/KNWR:Ento:1200 http://arctos.database.museum/guid/KNWR:Ento:8063 http://arctos.database.museum/guid/KNWR:Ento:8064 Something else I like about Arctos is that information is reported automatically to GBIF and is traceable back to our collection records.  See the URI below. http://data.gbif.org/species/2053937/ Sincerely, Matt Matt Bowser, Entomologist Kenai National Wildlife Refuge PO Box 2139 Soldotna, Alaska 99669 60.4647°N, 151.0735°W (907) 260-2812 Charles Bartlett wrote on 02/25/2012 08:45:34 AM: > Thanks, Matt > > That is an interesting record system.  I anticipate databasing the > specimens - I'll have to be sure I cross-reference your specimen numbers. > > > -Charles > > On Fri, Feb 24, 2012 at 7:14 PM, wrote: > > Dear Dr. Bartlett, > > I have a box of 67 specimens of Delphacidae that I'll be dropping > off at the post office tomorrow. > > Attached is the loan documentation. > > The specimen records can be view at URI's like the one below.  The > digits after the last colon are the catalog number of each specimen. > > http://arctos.database.museum/guid/KNWR:Ento:5263 > > Sincerely, > > Matt > > > > Matt Bowser, Entomologist > Kenai National Wildlife Refuge > PO Box 2139 > Soldotna, Alaska 99669 > 60.4647°N, 151.0735°W > (907) 260-2812 > Charles Bartlett wrote on 02/24/2012 04:00:38 AM: > > > > Yes - > > > > I'll be interested to see what you have found. > > > > Thanks, > > > > -Charles > > > On Thu, Feb 23, 2012 at 7:49 PM, wrote: > > > > Dear Dr. Bartlett, > > > > May I send you some more Delphacids from our collection, including > > material collected in 2011 from our rapid ecological assessment > (URI below)? > > > > http://arctos.database.museum/project/-kenai-national-wildlife- > > refuge-arthropod-rapid-ecological-assessment > > > > Sincerely, > > > > Matt > > > > Matt Bowser, Entomologist > > Kenai National Wildlife Refuge > > PO Box 2139 > > Soldotna, Alaska 99669 > > 60.4647°N, 151.0735°W > > (907) 260-2812 > > > > > > > > -- > > Charles Bartlett > > University of Delaware > > Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology > > 250 Townsend Hall > > 531 S College Ave > > Newark, DE 19716-2160 > > > > Dept phone (302) 831-2526 (or 3138) > > Fax (302) 831-8889 > > > > -- > Charles Bartlett > University of Delaware > Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology > 250 Townsend Hall > 531 S College Ave > Newark, DE 19716-2160 > > Dept phone (302) 831-2526 (or 3138) > Fax (302) 831-8889 -- Charles Bartlett University of Delaware Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology 250 Townsend Hall 531 S College Ave Newark, DE 19716-2160 Dept phone (302) 831-2526 (or 3138) Fax (302) 831-8889
